 Character Development

For helping with character development if I decided to do a Drama for my narrative piece, we were asked to develop two characters from our imagination. We had to cut out two images of people from magazines, and write about them from a list of facts. These included: age, occupation, favourite colour, biggest fear, dream job, favourite drink, food, song, original place of birth, where they live, bad habits etc. By doing this I was able to create a character in order to write a script. I came up with two characters called Oliver Goodman and Kitty Prince. I wanted some correlation between the two so I could write a script, so I had them both live in New York. The next step was to find a location for them both to meet. I found an image of a 7-Eleven type grocery store. This gave me a lot of scope for what they could talk about and a reason for them being there. I needed to somehow incorporate one of the characters biggest fears, so decided to go along with Oliver's fear, being held at gunpoint. Therefore, the main point of action in the script was a robbery at gun point in the store.

Overall, I was really pleased with my script. Even though the brief said it had to be two pages, I felt that the character came across really well, and their social status and personal differences were conveyed well. I did find it challenging not to go on and on with the description of the scene, as I know that these location set ups shouldn't be long paragraphs, but short and to the point. I feel the dialogue is natural between the two, and by reading it aloud, I was able to see which parts didn't work too well, and which parts flowed. In the future, , I would like to make this into a short film, as I like the concept, and the underlying theme of class and that everyone is in fact equal and should look out for each other. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of making characters and a script.
