Shot Analysis

My beginning shot for my music video is a ECU of a flame from a Zippo lighter. This will slowly zoom out over a period of approximately 3-5 seconds and will be used to light a candle held in one of the actors hands. This beginning shot is important to set the vibe for the rest of the video. The flame is a repeated motif throughout my video, and conveys the theme of time, and how the speakers feelings change throughout the course of the song.

This shot will happen on the line "All my senses blind". The camera will spin around the actor whilst she has semi-sheer black material around her head, in effect making her blind. The spinning around from the camera will give a disjointed, fracture effect, putting the viewer in the position of the speaker, making the video intriguing and interesting.

This shot will be an ECU of one of the cast members eyes reflecting the fire within. This will be important in connoting the internal rage of the singer, and how she feels tainted by their relationship. This shot will happen on the line "What I would do not to look"

Another motif I intend to use in my video is string, conveying control in a relationship. Although it is only seen once on my storyboard, I intend to have it repeated subtly in lots of the shots, for example, in the shot where the actors are running around in a circle holding hands, the string will be wrapped around their arms, joining them all together. For this particular shot, I will zoom in on the hand to make the string more prominent and obvious, rather than an extra throughout the video.

Lighting wise for my video, I would like to have strong shadows, using a strong key light and little fill light. In this particular shot, I'd like to use only backlight to create a outlined silhouette of the actor, creating an ominous tone to the video. This conveys a feeling of darkness inside her.

My initial idea for the underwater shots was to film them in the sea, but this idea was not practical, as there was issues with lighting and weather conditions. Therefore, the shots with my actor walking into the water under the moonlight will be combined with the underwater swimming pool shots. For theses, I'd like to have one light above the surface, which will create a ripple effect through the water. The actor will wear a black, long flowing dress which will float around in the water. These shots will also be in slow motion to create a sense of loss of time. This will happen on the line "Let it crash down" in quick cut shots between the fire shots and the water shots.

For these shots, I'd like to use heavy makeup to draw an eye on the forehead of my actor. This will connote the sense of supernatural and witch craft. The third eye is an aspect I have looked at in my mindmaps, and links to the chakras. I'd like these shots to be extreme close ups, zooming out and then panning down the feet of the actor.

For the dancing shots, I'd like to create a frantic feel to the section by having a shaky hand held camera spinning around them while they dance in a cult. This could be a mix of slow motion and speed up shots to again create a sense of fragmentation and disjuncted behaviour.
