 Contextual Artwork

The Persistence Of Memory

As well as looking at some of my favourite movie sequences and directors, I also looked at different types of artwork for my video. In particular, I looked at the work of surrealist artists, as I felt their abstract and unusual work would correspond well with the tone and theme of my video. Therefore, I looked at Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory". The use of colour and tone throughout his piece very much matches my ideas of colour symbolism. The use of reddish tones for the pendant and the background juxtapose with the lighter blue hues of the sea and clocks. These colours are nearly opposite on the colour wheel, and therefore nicely contrast each other, much like what I want to do in my video. This visual juxtaposition also connotes a sense of unease in the painting, foreshadowing a later confrontation or bad memory. The use of colour is one of the reasons why I personally love this piece, and chose it as part of my con textual inspiration.

Giraffes on Fire

Another piece of work in which I was drawn to for my music video is Dali's Giraffes on Fire. The composition of a mirroring effect of the multiple giraffes give the piece a multi dimensional aspect, and I would like to use this idea of mirroring in my own work. For instance, I will have one actor in the sea with their arms raised up, and another in front of a fire again with their arms raised, and mirroring this image will give a sense of conflict between fire and water. Adding on, the overall tone of this piece is dark, unlike the previous piece which is more reflective, and contrasts with colour. This piece is all dark browns, reds and yellows. I would also like to layer shots in my video, so that I can have blurs of additional layers, to make it more 3D much like this painting here.

Daria Hlazatova

I also looked at the work of Daria Hlazatova, as she looks into aspects of the supernatural with her art. I have used some of her work as backgrounds on my website, as I feel her work is prefect in describing the feel and tone of my video idea. The detail seen in her mutli-media drawings/ prints are beautiful, with the attention to detail being astounding. Her compositions and ability to create storyline with her drawings is also very inspirational. I looked at a few of her works, and collected them on my Pinterest account. I was particularly drawn to this one on the left, as it contains small crescent moons, much like the moons I want in my video, and stars, a concept I want to look at in reference to the Greek myths of the three moirai. The repeated motifs of moons and water in her pieces all represent the idea of female energy, something I want to look at with repeated motifs in my video. Moreover, the representation of women in her pieces are exceptional, with a severe lack of male presence. I would like my video to be all female cast, with a female protagonist throughout. Her paintings are much like this, sometimes with two or three subjects. They worship the idea of the female body, and often have crowns/ emblems on the female figures. I would like to use this idea but with jewellery in my video, and have elaborate costumes to make the video more visually impactful.
